Trump demands Iran's uranium and no tolls on Hormuz ships

Iran outlines new Strait of Hormuz management zone, says transit requires authorisation

The US. Iran remained locked on Thursday in directly opposing positions over Tehran's uranium stockpile and control of the Strait of Hormuz, offering little hope for progress in Pakistani-led efforts to end the conflict.

President Donald Trump said the United States would eventually recover Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium. which Washington believes is intended for a nuclear weapon, though Tehran insists it is solely for peaceful purposes.

"We will get it. We don't need it, we don't want it. We'll probably destroy it after we get it,. we're not going to let them have it," Trump told reporters at the White House.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has. however, directed that the uranium must not be sent abroad, two senior Iranian sources told Reuters before Trump's remarks.

Trump also criticised Tehran's intention to charge fees for use of the Strait of Hormuz off Iran's coast, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil. natural gas passed before the war.

"We want it open, we want it free. We don't want tolls," he said. "It's an international waterway."

Little progress in talks

Six weeks after a fragile ceasefire took effect. negotiations to end the war have shown little progress, although Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir was possibly heading to Tehran on Thursday for further talks, three sources told Reuters.

"We're speaking to all the various groups in Iran to streamline communication. so things pick up pace," said one source familiar with the negotiations.

"Trump's patience running thin is a concern,. we're working on the pace at which messages are relayed from each side."

The stalemate is straining the global economy, largely because of the inflationary effect of rising oil prices.

Trump faces growing domestic pressure ahead of November's midterm elections. with his approval rating near its lowest level since returning to the White House, partly due to fuel price increases.

Oil prices climbed on Thursday, with U.S. crude rising 3.22% to $101.42 a barrel and Brent crude gaining 2.54% to $107.71 a barrel.

Trump has warned he is prepared to resume strikes on Iran - first launched jointly by the US. Israel inlate February- if he does not receive what he called the "right answers" from Tehran.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned that renewed attacks would trigger retaliation extending beyond the region.

Tehran submitted its latest proposalto Washington this week.

Iranian descriptions of the proposal suggest it largely repeats demands previously rejected by Trump, including Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, compensation for war damage, sanctions relief, release of frozen assets. withdrawal of US troops.

Iran's deputy foreign minister on Thursday reiterated Tehran's claim to sovereignty over the strait, saying aggression by the US, Israel. some regional states had fundamentally altered security conditions in the waterway.
