A shock group-stage exit? T20 World Cup team guide

New Zealand beat South Africa in the final to win the last T20 World Cup in 2024

The Women's T20 World Cup starts on Friday. with hosts England taking on Sri Lanka in the tournament opener at Edgbaston.

Six-time winners Australia start as favourites but 50-over world champions India. back-to-back finalists South Africa might have something to say about that.

As for England, they sealed a big series win against India in the build-up. have never lost a World Cup when they have been the hosts.

The 12-team tournament consists of two groups of six. with the top two teams from each group going through to the semi-finals before the final at Lord's on 5 July.

Former England spinner. 2017 World Cup winner Alex Hartley, who is part of the BBC Test Match Special commentary team, gives a guide to each team and shares her predictions and a player to watch from each participating side.

Australia always start global tournaments as favourites. they have a point to prove in this one - not to anyone else, just themselves because they have fallen short recently.

They lost in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in 2024 and in the 50-over tournament last year. They know they'll have the favourites tag on them. so it'll be interesting to see how they approach that under the new leadership of Sophie Molineux after Alyssa Healy's retirement.

Player to watch:Annabel Sutherland (all-rounder)

Prediction:Champions

They absolutely have the potential to be double world champions. They've got the Women's Premier League, so they are more used to playing under pressure. in front of crowds than arguably anyone else.

There is always the question of whether they can they cope with the expectation from their fans. The 50-over World Cup win has shifted their reputation of crumbling under pressure by finally getting over the line. in T20 cricket they are still a bit too inconsistent with the ball.

Their strength is in their batting - they have power hitting all the way down the order. many teams are lacking. But they are in the hardest group and I can see an upset.

Prediction:Group-stage exit

They have made three world finals in a row now. having lost all of them, they have gained a reputation of buckling under pressure.

This is the group of death so it'll be very tough to get out of, but I think the return of Shabnim Ismail to share the new ball with Marizanne Kapp makes them formidable. they have an exceptional captain in Laura Wolvaardt.

Ismail's return could be seen as a step backwards, if you look at what it means about South Africa's strength in depth,. without doubt she makes the team stronger.

Prediction:Losing semi-finalists

I can see Pakistan winning a couple of games but with India, Australia. South Africa in their group, it looks almost impossible for them to reach the semi-finals.

They showed at the 50-over World Cup that they have got lots of potential in their bowling attack, as they almost caused upsets against Australia. England, but they lack power in the batting line-up.

All eyes will be on captain Fatima Sana. There has been a lot of talk about whether she should get an opportunity in franchise cricket so this is a big chance for her to put her hand up. perform against those stronger teams.

Player to watch:Fatima Sana (all-rounder)

Prediction:Group-stage exit

Similarly to Pakistan, Bangladesh's strength is in their bowling. They had England in all sorts of trouble in last year's World Cup. they don't have the batting experience or power to get over the line.

I can see their bowling causing a few problems but not enough to trouble the big three in this group.

It's going to be tough for them because they just don't play enough. without a domestic system, there is no strength in depth.

Player to watch:Marufa Akter (fast bowler)

Prediction:Group-stage exit

Again, almost impossible for them to get out of this group. it's one of the best stories of the World Cup that they have made it this far.

One of their players (Caroline de Lange) has quit their day job as a doctor to play in this tournament which just shows where they're at in terms of development,. they are not a professional side.

But it will be an amazing experience for them. this is what the 12-team tournament is about: growing the game. They will be quite reliant on their captain Babette de Leede. Sterre Kalis, who is their most experienced player and has played domestic cricket in the UK for a while.

Prediction:Group-stage exit

Ball-by-ball commentary on all 33 matches across BBC Sounds. the BBC Sport website and app, which also have live text commentary on selected games and video highlights.

We've seen a new-look England in T20s this year. Head coach Charlotte Edwards has put a conscious emphasis on all-rounders through the likes of Freya Kemp. Dani Gibson, a bit more like Australia.

They have under-performed in recent World Cups - they haven't reached a global final since 2022 - so they will want to show they have improved under pressure. is when they have struggled before.

They've had a really good build-up and they can take lot of confidence from beating a strong team in India.

Player to watch:Freya Kemp (all-rounder)

Prediction:Runners-up

They're the defending champions, but that win in 2024 was such a surprise and they are still underdogs here.

There's no pressure for them to back up that title.

Against England, they looked quite confused about the batting order,. they don't quite know what to do with Suzie Bates - she batted at the top of the order and at nine.

Their reliance on Melie Kerr and Sophie Devine showed in that series, too. The big three of Bates, Devine. Lea Tahuhu are playing in their last tournament - will that give them more freedom or will it add more pressure?

Player to watch:Sophie Devine (all-rounder)

Prediction:Group-stage exit

I love seeing Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin opening the batting, they could cause bowlers a lot of problems.

You just never know what you're going to get with West Indies, which is what makes them so entertaining.

The experienced Stafanie Taylor has upped her game recently. while Chinelle Henry has had opportunities in franchise cricket which will hopefully ease the reliance on Matthews.

They have it in them to beat anyone on their day with the power in their batting,. the inconsistency in their bowling is a worry.

Player to watch:Chinelle Henry (all-rounder)

Prediction:Losing semi-finalists

Scotland are real underdogs for me. They've got a great side because so many of them are consistently playing domestic cricket in the UK.

That means they've been able to develop really quickly, quicker than the likes of Ireland now. Having Kirstie Gordon back is a huge boost, as she's made the switch back from England.

I can see them causing an upset,. I don't think it will be enough for them to make it out of the group.

Player to watch:Ailsa Lister (batter)

Prediction:Group-stage exit

Ireland are going to struggle and they probably won't make it out of the group.

They are too reliant on Gaby Lewis. Orla Prendergast when it comes to the batting, especially now Laura Delany has been ruled out with injury.

They played some good cricket against West Indies. Pakistan in the tri-series in the build-up to the World Cup, but I just doubt whether they'll be able to do that consistently.

Player to watch:Amy Hunter (wicketkeeper-batter)

Prediction:Group-stage exit

Sri Lanka follow the familiar trend of being too reliant on one superstar, and that is Chamari Athapaththu. She is a fantastic player but she can't be the match-winner every time.

They are a team I worry about because they just don't play enough. They don't have the structure in place to develop their players, and their batting is their main weakness.

However they have a tidy bowling attack, which will most likely be very spin-heavy.

Player to watch:Kaveesha Dilhari (all-rounder)

Prediction:Group-stage exit
