Dar, UN chief discuss regional conflicts, UN reform in New York

Discussions also cover Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach, multilateral cooperation, and regional stability efforts

Deputy Prime Minister. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York on the sidelines of the UN Security Council Open Debate, where both sides exchanged views on a broad range of regional and global issues, including the Middle East, South Asia, Afghanistan, Palestine, and UN Security Council reform, the Foreign Office said on Wednesday.

Dararrivedin New York on Tuesday for an official visit from May 26 to 28 to participate in a high-level UNSC open debate convened under China’s presidency of the council.

According to the FO, Dar appreciated the secretary general’s “steadfast commitment to the United Nations. multilateralism” and acknowledged his “continued support for and strong cooperation with Pakistan.”

Both sides exchanged views on recent regional developments, including the situation in the Middle East and West Asia. Dar appreciated the UN chief’s “principled position. support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts” and highlighted Islamabad’s diplomatic role in promoting regional peace.

He also referred to Pakistan’s “successful hosting of the Islamabad Talks in April,” describing it as an important diplomatic breakthrough,. noted that the ceasefire facilitated through Pakistan’s efforts was continuing to hold. He stressed the need for continued engagement and dialogue to ensure durable peace and stability.

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles. purposes of the UN Charter and to advancing international peace and security through constructive engagement at the United Nations, according to the statement.

On UN reform, he welcomed the secretary general’s “UN80 Initiative”. stressed that the interests and priorities of developing countries must remain central to the reform agenda. He underlined the importance of strengthening conflict prevention, peaceful dispute settlement, and peacebuilding efforts in line with evolving global realities.

Reiterating Pakistan’s position, Dar said UN reform must be based on “sovereign equality, transparency, inclusivity,. broad-based consensus among member states,” adding that these principles could be upheld through the addition of elected members.

Dar expressed concern over “provocative and inflammatory statements” by Indian leadership, saying they undermine regional stability. He also said India’s decision to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance constituted a violation of international law. treaty obligations.

He stressed that the Jammu. Kashmir dispute remained the core issue between Pakistan and India, reiterating that its resolution in accordance with UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people was essential for lasting peace in South Asia.

He further said a peaceful Afghanistan was vital for regional stability. while expressing concern over the use of Afghan soil by terrorist groups against Pakistan. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to protect its national security in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

On Palestine, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s “unwavering support for the Palestinian people. their legitimate struggle for self-determination and statehood.” He also appreciated the UN chief’s advocacy for the two-state solution and implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan, as endorsed in Security Council Resolution 2803.

According to the Foreign Office, the secretary general appreciated Pakistan’s active engagement at the United Nations. its contributions to international peace and security, including through diplomacy and peacekeeping operations.

On the sidelines of the UN debate, Dar also held separate meetings with his Bahraini, Cuban, Czech, and Portuguese counterparts.

In his meeting with Bahraini Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, both sides reaffirmed the “strong fraternal ties” between Pakistan. Bahrain and discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and other economic sectors. They also exchanged views on regional developments and multilateral cooperation at the UN.

In another meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, both sides discussed regional developments. reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation.

The Cuban side appreciated Pakistan’s solidarity during natural disasters, while Dar recalled Cuba’s support during the 2005 earthquake. Both sides agreed to further deepen ties for the benefit of their peoples.

In the meeting between Dar. Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, both leaders expressed satisfaction over the growing and increasingly substantive cooperation between Pakistan and the Czech Republic.

The FO said both sides discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, with particular focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, science. technology, education, and people-to-people contacts.

The FO added that, “The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the increasingly substantive cooperation between Pakistan and Czech Republic.”

It further stated that Dar appreciated the “growing momentum in bilateral cooperation”. highlighted “the potential for further expansion of cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, science and technology, education, and people-to-people contacts.”

The statement added that both sides also exchanged views on regional. global issues and agreed to intensify high-level contacts to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Dar later met with Portugal’s Minister of State. Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel in New York, and the two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, including bilateral relations, regional developments, and cooperation at multilateral forums, particularly at the United Nations.

The FO said both sides also exchanged views on the situation in Palestine and broader developments in West Asia. It further said the Portuguese foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic role in the region.

According to the FO, Dar also invited Rangel to visit Pakistan, which the Portuguese minister “warmly accepted”.

On Tuesday, Daraddressedan open debate of the UNSC during China’s presidency, calling for restraint. de-escalation in the Middle East, warning the Security Council that another prolonged conflict would endanger regional peace and further strain the fragile international order.

During the visit, he will also attend a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance on Thursday under the theme “Reforming. Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges.”
