Starmer said he would remain caretaker prime minister until Labour members choose a new leader in the coming weeks.
"I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on the 9th of July. completed by the summer recess. In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete. And I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power," he said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen thanked Starmer in a Mondayposton X: "It can take many leaders years to grow into the statesman you became in just two years. European and Ukrainian security is stronger because of you. Thank you, dear Keir."
In a Sunday Truth Social post, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Starmer of failing "badly" in two areas, while also wishing the foreign figure well.
"Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!" Trumpdeclared in the post.
