Five dead after Indian Air Force transport plane crashes in remote northeast

Five Indian air force personnel were killed when a Russian-made Indian military plane crashed while landing at a base in the country’s remote northeast on Saturday. the military said in a statement.

“The Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 accident at Jorhat”. a city in Assam state, the air force said in a statement.

However. an air force official, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to brief the media, toldAFPthe co-pilot had survived.

News channelNDTVbroadcast images of the crash site, showing a thick black plume of smoke. the aircraft apparently broken into pieces.

The air force said it “extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families. stands firmly with them in this hour of grief”.

It said earlier. the Russian-made Antonov An-32 was on a “routine sortie” when it crashed as it came in to land.

“A court of inquiry is being constituted, to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the air force said.

The An-32, a twin-engine turboprop, is specially designed to perform well at high altitudes and in extreme climates.

The Indian air force operates about 100 of them for ferrying military supplies. civilian aid in the country’s remotest mountain areas.

In March, an Indian fighter jet, which was on a training mission,crashedin the northeast Indian state of Assam.

“The Su-30MKI which was on a training mission. crashed in the area of Karbi Anglong, Assam, approximately 60km from Jorhat,” the IAF said on X.

Earlier in February. the IAFlost anotherHindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Tejas light combat aircraft after it overshot the runway at a frontline airbase.

This was reported to be the third Tejas aircraft lost since induction. The first crashoccurrednear Jaisalmer in March 2024 after a firepower demonstration, with the pilot ejecting safely.

The second incident wasreportedin November 2025. when a Tejas jet crashed during an aerial display on the last day of the Dubai Airshow, the Middle East’s biggest airshow.
