Tara Moriarty. NSW minister for agriculture, has said “nothing is off the table” in terms of how the government deals with the risks of future shark attacks.

Speaking to media in Coogee this morning. along with state member of parliament Marjorie O’Neill, in the wake of the shark attack on Saturday, Moriarty thanked the people who helped the injured young woman out of the water.

She said there have been “too many” shark attacks over the summer.

double quotation mark It’s been a really tough summer of shark activity and shark attacks in Sydney. And it’s something that the New South Wales government is taking very, very seriously. I have asked the department to provide me with urgent advice on how we can expand our shark management program in New South Wales.

We already have a $30m program that we rolled out and expanded over the summer following earlier shark attacks.

We put an additional $6m into that program over the summer to expand the use of drones,. research into bull sharks, particularly around tracking their movements around Sydney Harbour, and also education for swimmers, and ocean users.

Of course, sharing the ocean with these wild animals, and there is no perfect solution here. But I have asked the department to provide me with some urgent advice on how we can use more of that technology, have more drones in the skies, giving people some comfort. keeping an eye out for sharks and shark activity on our beaches.

Nothing is off the table in terms of how we deal with sharks going forward.

Surf Life Saving NSW granted exemption to fly drones over Coogee beach, minister says

In the press conference at Coogee just now. the NSW agriculture minister, Tara Moriarty, said the government was working with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Casa) to ensure that Surf Life Saving NSW would be able to fly drones over Coogee beach as part of its shark monitoring program.

double quotation mark We’ve got a partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW and Surfing NSW to run a drone program. They haven’t been able to fly drones over Coogee beach because of proximity to Sydney airport and Casa rules.

Surf Life Saving NSWs have applied to Casa for an urgent … exemption to be able to fly drones over Coogee Beach, that has been granted,. we, as a NSW government, will work with Surf Life Saving NSW to work with Casa to make sure that that becomes permanent.

White sharks can swim very close to shoreline, Fisheries spokesperson says

Green says it is not uncommon for sharks to be swimming very close to the shoreline.

Drone footage from Surf Life Saving New South Wales. as well as members of the public, shows white sharks in particular swimming very close to the shoreline, “well inside the surf zone”, Green says.

double quotation mark And that’s why we always say to people. you know, bull sharks are more of your riverine type animal, whereas white sharks in particular are a real surf animal. They really do swim up on to our beaches and along our beaches as well.

Coogee shark attack ‘quite a unique’ incident: NSW Fisheries

Tara Moriarty says the government prefers to use technology to track sharks.

double quotation mark I’m looking to expand the drone program to have eyes in the sky over our beaches. That is the priority, but nothing else is off the table.

Calls for culling at beaches people swim in do not address “how sharks work,” Moriarty said. Native sharks, including great whites, are protected species. But she did not rule out a culling program.

Marcel Green. shark program leader at the NSW Fisheries, said the incident on Saturday at Coogee was “quite a unique” incident:

double quotation mark The increased activity over summer was really driven by the bull sharks, particularly after all that heavy rainfall largely getting flushed out of Sydney Harbour. the Hawkesbury largely hanging around the Northern Beaches. So it wasn’t really much of an issue down here anyway.

What we saw yesterday was a quite a unique and different incident. So it wasn’t murky water. It was crystal clear, she was swimming between the flags, you know, doing everything right. So it was just one of those random events as the minister said. you know, we can never be protected 100% at every beach, every day, all the time.

Australia is facing a shortage of critical lubricants. How do we stop everything grinding to a halt?

Prices for base oils, used to make lubricants, are rising sharply. supplies are disrupted, causing concern that Australia is facing a shortage of engine oil and other lubricants used to keep engines running.

While the most immediate effect on commuters could be the pricing. availability of a routine oil change, shortages would affect any sector that relies on combustion engines, including agriculture.

The problem shows how widespread the fallout from the enduring Middle East conflict is. with disruptions extending beyond transport fuel to other crude oil-derived products including everything from plastics to paint thinner.

So how do we stop everything grinding to a halt?

Six months on from Australia’s deadliest terror attack. a permanent memorial will be established at Bondi beach to remember those killed, AAP reports.

The NSW government is pledging $8.3 million to support the Jewish community after 15 people were gunned down in a targeted antisemitic attack at a Hanukah celebration on 14 December last year.

As part of the package. $2m will be allocated to Waverley Council in Sydney’s east to support the construction of a permanent memorial.

Another $2m will be provided to school-based support. trauma-informed programs and grants, with $500,000 for the Community Security Group, which provides security to the Jewish community.

The NSW premier. Chris Minns, said on Sunday his government’s unwavering support was a long-term commitment to ensuring the state healed:

double quotation mark We said from the moment this attack took place. we would walk with the community every step of the way. We know that the community needs support and we’re continuing to provide that.

The Sydney Jewish Museum will receive $2.6m for redevelopment works including new modern antisemitism exhibitions.

The financial boost comes at a time of heightened focus as the royal commission on antisemitism. social cohesion holds public hearings. In an interim report released in April, the commission recommended Jewish community gatherings be earmarked as higher risk.

The NSW multiculturalism minister, Steve Kamper, said:

double quotation mark We know the impact of this attack didn’t end on that day. Not only will this package be of comfort to people now. over coming months, but it will lay the groundwork for greater social cohesion and long-term prevention into the future.

A vigil is being held at Bondi on Sunday for “remembrance, reflection and hope”, six months since the deadly attack.

Duniam says he’s proud of his record of achievements and says “I haven’t wasted a single day”.

double quotation mark I’ve had the honour of serving in the ministry under Scott Morrison. the shadow ministry under Peter Dutton, Sussan Ley, and, of course, now Angus Taylor. That has come with its own challenges. And, of course, if you take this job seriously, it takes a lot of work,. that is exactly what I’ve done.

This job has been a very serious one. And as a result, has taken up a lot of time and a lot of energy. It is odd to fight hard to get in, it’s even odder when you fight harder to stay,. then to pull up stumps.

But as I say, when family come into it, you can’t think twice about it. Your priorities become very, very clear.

And when I brought home the Sunday Tasmanian. sat it on the table, my youngest son when he saw it, when he woke up this morning, said ‘I thought this day would never come.’

Duniam says he has ‘no regrets about pulling up stumps’ as he announces retirement from politics

The shadow home affairs spokesperson, Jonathan Duniam, has been speaking just now in Hobart about his decision to quit politics.

He says it’s “irrelevant” whether people agreed with what he has said or done in his role, because “what you do, when you put your hand up for public office, is you stick to what you believe in, advocate for the outcomes you think are right for the community you represent,. go like the clappers to make sure you get the best outcome.”

He said this is what he has done for years in his ministerial roles with the Liberal party. his work in the Senate. But the work has been hard on his family, he says:

double quotation mark Twenty-five years of my life, dedicated to long hours,. being away from home a lot has taken a toll on my family. And we’ve made a decision, of course, that this is in the best interests of my family and I.

Only last night. as I was reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid to my 11-year-old son, it made absolute sense that I was making this decision.

I have no regrets about pulling up stumps. paving the way for someone else to take on the challenge of restoring the trust that we sadly have lost over the last two elections, to ensure that we win back the votes we need to return more than two senators to the federal parliament, that we can take back the seats of Bass and Braddon, and hopefully Lyons, too, at some point in the future.

As the family in the car also began to flee the shooting. police mistook the car as belonging to the men who had robbed them. A police official told Dawn that officers “opened indiscriminate fire on the car,” which crashed into a gate shortly afterwards.

Local officials have described the incident as “highly shocking”. assured the family a police inquiry was under way, and there would be consequences for those found to be responsible.

Elite paddleboarder Charlie Verco has only seen one shark bigger than the one he saw on Saturday at Sydney’s Coogee beach.

The North Bondi athlete was training for the world championships in Hawaii in July on Saturday morning when he heard a swimmer shouting “shark”.

As he headed towards the area of water where about three people appeared close to a large grey shadow. several swimmers attempted to climb onto his 18-foot (5.5 metre) paddleboard.

He told Guardian Australia:

double quotation mark I’m familiar with shark behaviour. it looked like it was just being inquisitive, it didn’t look like aggressive behaviour.

Verco, a trained surf life saver, attempted to signal to the lifeguards on shore, hoping they would sound the shark alarm. clear swimmers from the water.

double quotation mark But then another woman started screaming,. I could see she was being dragged around by something … there was a lot of blood in the water, it was quite shocking.

The shark surfaced, I saw its dorsal fin, it was big, about three. a half metres, I’ve only ever seen one shark bigger than that and that was a tiger shark in Hawaii.

Changing tack, Butler brushes off the suggestion that One Nation’s “fire the liar” campaign has been damaging:

double quotation mark Oh, look, I think these campaigns come and they go. We’ve all run them, all political parties…
