KMC launches plan to keep citizens updated on air quality

KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Saturday launched an initiative aimed at improving public awareness regarding air pollution. environmental conditions in the city.

Under this programme, the Air Quality Index (AQI) will be displayed on streamers. surface-mounted device (SMD) screens installed across KMC’s jurisdiction.

Launched in collaboration with the Climate Action Centre (CAC). the initiative would help Karachiites to stay aware of the city’s real-time environmental conditions.

Addressing the launching ceremony. Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that the initiative provides real-time information about air quality to citizens across Karachi.

“The project will see AQI displays installed at more than 100 prominent locations. major arteries of the city,” he said.

He said the KMC is committed to transforming Karachi into an environmentally responsible and sustainable city. The future of Karachi, he said, is directly linked with environmental protection,. the KMC would continue to take practical measures for a greener tomorrow.

Flanked by CAC’s Yasir Hussain, he said that KMC is also introducing a green fleet for municipal vigilance. operational staff as part of its broader environmental strategy.

According to the mayor, these initiatives are part of the administration’s long-term vision to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. improve urban sustainability.

He announced that for the upcoming fiscal year, a dedicated Green Fund has been allocated to establish more green spaces. launch additional eco-friendly projects across Karachi.

KMC officials. on the occasion, informed that more than 50 air quality monitoring devices have already been installed in different areas of the city, while air quality data will be displayed at over 100 public locations to ensure citizens remain informed about environmental conditions in their surroundings.
