Free-falling PBKS in desperate need of points against MI

Free-falling PBKS in desperate need of points against MI

Punjab Kings (PBKS) began IPL 2026 looking invincible. Six wins. a washout meant they were unbeaten in their first seven games - the best start by any team in any IPL season. But since then, they have plunged into free fall, losing four on the trot,. are dangerously close to a scenario where they finish outside the top two. Perhaps even the top four if they don't stop losing.

A win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Dharamsala on Thursday will push them up at least one spot to No. 3, but a defeat will leave them vulnerable to be overtaken by Chennai Super Kings. Rajasthan Royals, who are only one point behind at Nos. 5 and 6.

During their dream start to the season, the PBKS batting was doing the heavy lifting in their victories, but with some of their key batters experiencing dips in form, their bowling troubles. sloppy fielding have resulted in the string of defeats.

PBKS hold the enviable record for the most successful 200-plus chases by any T20 team (10),. they also hold the unenviable record of having failed to defend the most 200-plus targets (9). They have also dropped the most chances this season (18).

Their bowling at the death is also a concern. PBKS have conceded an economy rate of 14 in the death overs in their four successive defeats. with eight bowlers going at 10 runs an over or more. They have changed their personnel around but are yet to find a solution to their bowling problem.

MI are already out of contention for the knockouts, with only six points after 11 games,. have nothing to lose. PBKS, on the other hand, have plenty.

Punjab Kings: LLLLW (Last five completed games, most recent first) Mumbai Indians: LWLLL

Ben Dwarshuis was expensive - 1 for 51 in four overs - in his first game of the season,. PBKS are likely to stick with him in place of Xavier Bartlett. They are set to go with the same line-up that lost to Delhi Capitals on Monday.

PBKS XII (probable): 1 Prabhsimran Singh (wk). 2 Priyansh Arya, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Cooper Connolly, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Shashank Singh, 7 Suryansh Shedge, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Ben Dwarshuis, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal, 12 Yash Thakur

Hardik Pandya is likely to miss out again due to back spasms,. there is also uncertainty around MI's stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav. He had travelled to Mumbai for personal reasons after their previous game in Raipur on Sunday. while the rest of the squad went to Dharamsala. Suryakumar could join the team on Thursday; if he isn't available. Robin Minz or Danish Malewar could come into the XI.

MI XII (probable): 1 Ryan Rickelton (wk). 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Naman Dhir, 4 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Will Jacks, 7 Raj Bawa, 8 Corbin Bosch, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 AM Ghazanfar, 11 Jasprit Bumrah, 12 Raghu Sharma/Krish Bhagat

Arshdeep Singh is crucial to the PBKS bowling attack, and he has blown hot and cold this season. Against Rajasthan Royals, he took 1 for 68 before returning figures of 2 for 24 against Gujarat Titans. He took 1 for 43 against Sunrisers Hyderabad before bouncing back with 2 for 21 against DC. With their bowling flagging, PBKS need Arshdeep to lead their attack in Dharamsala, where fast bowlers dominated the previous fixture.

After recovering from his hamstring injury. Rohit Sharma has been in electric form for MI - scoring 243 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 177.37 - comfortably his highest strike rate in any season. He has been especially brutal against pace, hitting a boundary every 3.2 balls. At a ground where fast bowlers are expected to have a bigger role. Rohit will pose a difficult challenge for PBKS.

In the previous match in Dharamsala between PBKS and DC on Monday, all 39 overs were bowled by fast bowlers. Axar Patel for DC and Yuzvendra Chahal for PBKS did not bowl at all. Though there was significant seam movement all through the game, there was also significant dew during the second innings. There was also some rain on the eve of the match.

Shashank Singh has dropped five catches this season - the most by any player Arshdeep Singh has dismissed Ryan Rickelton three times in seven T20s. with the batter striking at just 119 against the left-arm quick. Rohit Sharma is one half-century away from 50 IPL fifties. Only Virat Kohli, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan have achieved that milestone before him

"We just have not put together a complete game. One day it's been the bowlers who would do well. the batters struggle a little bit or the the batters do well and the bowlers struggle. The key moments in the game which this team is known for winning. we just haven't done that this year." Corbin Bosch on MI's poor performance
